Job Title: Media Specialist

Training & Employment with NYC CoolRoof

NYC °CoolRoofs provides New Yorkers with the opportunity to earn paid work experience and credentials in the construction sector.

This transitional training opportunity includes:

  • 10 to 11 weeks of full-time, paid work experience installing energy saving reflective rooftops at a starting wage of $15 per hour

  • Opportunity to earn credentials in the construction sector, including 4-Hour Flagger, 4-Hour Scaffold User, Fireguard, CPR/First Aid, and OSHA 30-Hour (offered as part of the 40-Hour Construction Site Safety Training (SST) certification) at no cost

  • Ongoing career and job connection support for the construction sector

Candidates can qualify if they:

  • Live in New York City

  • Are 18 years of age or older

  • Can work a flexible schedule that includes early mornings

  • Can navigate New York City and travel to installation sites throughout the five boroughs

  • Are committed to pursuing a career in construction

  • Able to perform manual labor, such as climbing stairs, carrying 50-pound buckets, and working on a roof in all weather conditions.

  • Able to wear a mask for a 7-hour shift and follow safety protocols

  • Able to work with paint that contains latex and silicone ingredients

Summer Program: BOSSGIRLS ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Bossgirls, a free entrepreneurship camp for high school girls from the Zahn Innovation Center at the City College of New York, is now taking applications for Summer 2021 (virtual). Students work on their own startup ideas as they learn to build a business from the ground up. They'll gain new skills, develop greater confidence, and make new friends along the way. As an added bonus, students are provided mentorship through our sponsors at Standard Chartered, and they hear from women entrepreneurs throughout the program.


Subjects/skills covered:

  • Ideation/Design Thinking

  • Customer Discovery, Research, and Interviewing

  • Business Model Development

  • Marketing

  • Competitive Analysis

  • Financials

  • UI/UX Design & Prototyping

  • Presentation skills, and more!

No prior experience is required, but we do require a completed application

Summer Youth with DYCD - SYEP


SUMMER YOUTH DYCD has approved a fully remote option for our older youth.

SYEP 2021 Program Model

  • Younger Youth (YY) will receive a high-quality Project Based Learning Experience

    • YY will complete a total of 12.5 hours of PBL Activities weekly totaling 75 hours within six weeks.

    • Payment: YY stipends will be $700 in total and information from DYCD regarding partial payment is not available at this time.

  • Older Youth (OY) will have two track options

    • Track One: A full worksite or internship assignment that can be remote or in-person totaling 150 hours.

    • Track Two: A blended model that includes a partial worksite or internship assignment that can be remote or in-person for 75 hours and a skill-based training Professional development or Technical Training for remaining 75 hours. Both must equal 150 hours.

    • Payment: Older Youth will receive NYS Minimum Wage for a total of 150 hours and information from DYCD regarding partial payment is not available at this time..

Biorocket Research Internship Program @ Genspace

The application deadline is Friday, May 7, 2021

The Biorocket Program is a paid research internship experience for New York City public high school students ages 15 and up. This program gives students an opportunity to learn the latest advances in genetic engineering and biology laboratory skills. By participating in the program, teens will have access to scientific mentors, behind-the-scenes lab tours and field trips, and improv training for science communication skills at Genspace, a community biology lab in Brooklyn, NY.


*Please Note: We strongly encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences to apply. We define these groups expansively — including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, people with disabilities, first-generation college students, and people from low income families.


Time Commitment:

  • 6 weeks Monday-Thursday from July 12-August 19
    9:00am - 5:00pm (in-person) / 10:00am - 3:00pm (online)

  • 2 days/week after school from September-December, 4:00-6:30pm

By participating in this program, you will:

  • Learn how to work in the lab using biology and genetic engineering techniques

  • Work with 12 other teens and scientist mentors to design the summer research project based on your interests

  • Feel like a scientist and get your mind blown discovering new and fascinating stuff in biology

  • Get to know real scientists and people who are working science, technology, and design

  • Get career guidance, tour other research labs and biotech companies

  • Learn science communication skills and share your work with your friends and families

  • Be part of a city-wide network of other teen research internships

  • Earn a $2,000 stipend

Eligibility Requirements

  • 15 Years of Age by July 1, 2021

  • Live OR attend a NYC Public or Charter School within 45 min of Genspace*

  • Interested in biology, biotechnology, genetics, etc. (no minimum GPA, no transcript required)

  • Graduating seniors are eligible to apply, but should consider whether they can commit to participating in the fall if they are leaving for college

*Some exceptions may apply, so if you live further away or attend a private/independent school and you have a strong interest, please apply anyway.
